Below is a list of most of the sessions students can choose from at Yearbook Jumpstart. Part of this workshop will involve hands-on practice for students and/or their editorial team and group time. Most sessions are optional and attendees can either redo a session or use any time block to work on their own or with their group.
Introduction: The workshop will begin with some housekeeping items/general information followed by a keynote speaker who will engage your staff on the elements of a great yearbook and share some of the latest trends in yearbook design nationwide.
Journalism: A discussion of coverage, captions, headlines, the lede, prose, descriptive text and the active voice as it pertains to yearbook journalism.
Photography: This session will help students gain a better understanding of resolution for the print medium, as well as some basic regarding photo composition, framing and how to use photos to tell a story.
Cover and Theme Design: All attendees will have the opportunity to sit with a Walsworth artist to have him/her either sketch out ideas for covers, endsheets or other designs and even complete the final artwork for submission to the plant if your team reaches this stage. We strongly suggest preparing for this workshop by finalizing your theme concept so that your key artwork can be completed at this session before you even begin the school year! This means working this out with your editorial team before the school year ends if possible. If your school is planning to use a custom designed cover, coming to this session with a clear idea of what you want your cover to look like will be invaluable!
Yearbook 360 (Online Design): Yearbook JumpStart is an Online Design-intensive workshop to help staff learn to use the leading online design tool in the yearbook industry. There will be both beginning and advanced sessions in the program, from assigning tasks to uploading and assigning images, to creating spreads and advanced tips and tricks.
Marketing and Sales: For schools that need to raise money for their book or wish to use their book as a fundraiser, Walsworth staff and attendees will share ideas and best practices for making things happen. This open forum-style session will also invite a discussion on marketing and publicizing a yearbook.
Staff Management and Recruitment: This session will explore best practices for recruiting and retaining staff as well as successful staff organization and workflow strategies
Parent/Senior Ads: This open forum-style session will invite a discussion best practices for capturing, organizing, creating and designing senior or parent ads in your yearbook.
Practices: Few things go farther in reducing time and stress in creating a yearbook than being organized and effectively utilizing all the tools available to you. We will discuss the importance of planning your book and adhering to your planning ladder, as well as preferred file management tactics based on your technology landscape. We will also briefly touch upon quick solutions to common technology problems and present all your support options.
Yearbook Apps: Discover the cool factor of Walsworth’s Yearbook Snap and other yearbook-related apps that will help your program in all sorts of ways.
Roundtables: Roundtables for editors and advisers to discussion attendee-generated topics in depth.
